Displaying RSS Feeds?

Oct 10, 2011 at 4:19 PM

Hi,

I'm having some trouble getting an RSS feed to display in the latest changeset (89969).

I've successfully got a series of Twitter feeds displaying on the first Panorama panel, and wanted the RSS feed on the second, but I can't seem to make it show up. The feed URL in question is http://mojang.com/feed . I tried a different feed (http://www.questionablecontent.net/QCRSS.xml) to test, and while nothing was displayed, the panel scrolled further to the right before the reaching the third panel - which I take as an indication that it's at least trying to do something.

I've taken a look at MainPage.xaml but I can't really make head or tail of it beyond the fact that the first Panorama item is fairly different from the second in a number of ways.

Is there something simple I've failed to notice or do? The only file I've changed is Configuration.xaml; I've uploaded it here: http://pastebin.com/Pyd7cegv

Let me know if any further information would be helpful.

Andrew

You could just try making the second panorama item use the same layout as the first. By default the second panorama item is designed to display an array of tiles but this assumes your feed has images. Let me know how you go

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I had a fiddle with MainPage.xaml, trying to duplicate the first panel to the second. Didn't have much luck - I either got complaints about things having duplicate names (to be expected, really), or the panels didn't display..

I realised that the default Configuration.xaml worked fine, so I went back and had a look at that again, and tried to move mine back closer to what the default had, but with no success so far.

I guess I'll keep bashing away at it - it appears to be something I've done on my end, probably (I don't know a lot about programming, so the chance of my having inadvertently broken something is probably pretty high). The only other thing I can think of is that the default config uses a Flickr stream for the second panel, whereas I've got an RSS feed. Could there be some problem with RSS feeds on that panel, or something? (clutching at straws here)

Thanks again for the quick response.

Hi,

This is my first post & first time making an app on any platform, so please do pardon my ignorance when it comes to app development. I took a C++ class in college a few years back but this template alone has been better and more useful than anything I learned in the class. Big thanks for the template Nick it has certainly upped my confidence.

I am also having trouble displaying RSS feeds like Andrew. I know this is an older thread but has anyone been able to figure out a workaround on getting what may be older or nonconforming RSS feeds? I was able to get CNN.com RSS feeds working fine with 95167 which is what I'm using and I was conversely able to get my RSS feed working on 88398 but not with 95167.

When I typed my RSS feed into a validator it came back saying this:

Message

Feeds should not be served with the 'type/subtype' media type

Explanation

The web server is reporting an unexpected MIME type for a feed. Although we tried to parse it as a feed, aggregators may well report this as an error and act as if the user had pointed them at something other than a feed.

RSS feeds should be served as application/rss+xml (RSS 1.0 is an RDF format, so it may be served as application/rdf+xml instead). Atom feeds should use application/atom+xml. Alternatively, for compatibility with widely-deployed web browsers, any of these feeds can use one of the more general XML types - preferably application/xml.

I tried uploading the feed to feedburner on wishful thinking, but no luck. Any additional help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
